Residential Permit Activity Shows Signs of Rebound

Year-to-date, single-family permits total 2,667. By comparison, single-family permits totaled 3,186 at the end of the first four months in 2000.

“While we are still showing a 16 percent decrease in the number of single-family permits year-to-date compared to last year, these numbers are encouraging,” said Tim Underwood, Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City.

Through March, the Kansas City metropolitan area experienced a 24 percent decrease in the number of single-family permits issued compared to the same period in 2000.

“The words that best describe our builder members’ attitude seems to be ‘cautious optimism,’ ” Underwood explained.

Olathe is the top-permitting city through April with 391 single-family permits issued this year. Closed behind is Kansas City, Mo., with 362 single-family permits issued year-to-date. Overland Park and Lee’s Summit are the third and fourth top-permitting cities with 276 and 252 single-family permits issued respectively.

Rounding out the top-permitting cities for the year-to-date are Shawnee, 183; Lenexa, 115; Blue Springs, 109; Raymore, 82; Independence, 77; and Kansas City, Kan., 66.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (HBA) is the voice of the housing industry and the source for housing information.
